Regenerative Medicine Q & A
What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is an approach to orthopedic care that uses treatments designed to support healing and improve the function of injured or painful joints and tissues.
Depending on your condition, symptoms, and overall health, Dr. Satow may recommend regenerative or injectable therapies as an alternative or complement to other orthopedic treatments.
Options may include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, hyaluronic acid injections, and other regenerative treatments tailored to your individual needs.
What are PRP injections?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses components of your own blood to support the body’s natural healing response. Platelets contain proteins called growth factors that play an important role in tissue repair.
During PRP treatment, Dr. Satow draws a small amount of your blood and processes it to concentrate the platelets. He then injects the platelet-rich solution into the targeted area. PRP injections may be considered for certain joint, tendon, ligament, or muscle problems. Because PRP comes from your own blood, the treatment doesn’t require donor tissue or synthetic medication.
What conditions can regenerative medicine treat?
Dr. Satow may recommend regenerative medicine for various orthopedic conditions, including:
- Osteoarthritis and joint pain
- Tendon injuries and tendinopathy
- Ligament injuries
- Muscle injuries
- Sports-related injuries
- Other chronic musculoskeletal problems
Whether regenerative treatment is appropriate depends on the type and severity of your condition. Dr. Satow performs a thorough evaluation before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
What are hyaluronic acid injections?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the fluid surrounding your joints. It helps lubricate and cushion the joint, allowing the bones to move more smoothly.
For patients with osteoarthritis, particularly knee osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid injections may help reduce discomfort and improve joint movement. These injections can be an option when more conservative treatments haven’t provided enough relief.
Is regenerative medicine right for me?
Regenerative medicine may be worth considering if you have ongoing joint or soft-tissue pain and want to explore nonsurgical treatment options. Results vary, and regenerative therapies aren’t appropriate for every orthopedic condition.
Dr. Satow reviews your symptoms, medical history, activity level, and imaging, when necessary, to determine the most appropriate treatment for you. He may recommend PRP, hyaluronic acid injections, another regenerative treatment, or a combination of therapies as part of your care plan.
